School Yourself: Learn More About Fayetteville State University

In 1865, a “sophisticated” education agenda was already underway in Fayetteville’s community. A year after the Civil War ended, the Phillips School provided primary education to Fayetteville’s black citizens, and the Sumner School provided intermediate education for this population.

Soon after, these schools consolidated to form the Howard School, this school was the genesis of Fayetteville State University. The school was recognized for its successful record of educating black youth, the Howard School was selected for this designation becoming the State Colored Normal School Fayetteville State Teachers College in 1939, a state and regionally accredited four-year college granting the Bachelor of Science degree in Education. Next, the school changed its name again to Fayetteville State College in 1963 and significant additions were made to the school system to accommodate a rapidly growing enrollment. Finally, in 1969, Dr. Charles Lyons, Jr. became president and in that year the college was formally renamed Fayetteville State University and designated a regional university by an act of the state legislature.

Today, the university offers Bachelor’s degrees in 43 areas, Master’s degrees in 23 areas, and one doctoral degree in educational leadership. Additionally, Fayetteville State University students may participate in over 78 registered student organizations, including sororities and fraternities.

Here at Marketfair, we support the growing university and invites you to check it out for yourself!
